NEWCASTLE 'THE STEEL CITY'

NEWCASTLE 'THE STEEL CITY'

My Store

Part of the OLD NEWCASTLE SERIES, Newcastle 'The Steel City' contains many landmarks from the city's past. A Novocastrian will see many artifacts, from the industrious BHP steel works, to the theatres and night clubs that no longer operate, to public transport now redundant or decommissioned, to extinct businesses and employers. This work comes in a retro grunge texture, allowing the viewer a more immersive work, that encapsulates the late 1900's aesthetic.

Work contains: (from left to right, top to bottom)
- The T&G BUILDING (corner of Watt and Hunter),
- BHP STEELWORKS (operated from 1915 to 1999),
- HAMILTON MUNICIPAL BUILDING AND W. R. ALEXANDER CLOCK TOWER (remodeled after the 1989 earthquake),
- 22 CHURCH STREET,
- VICTORIA THEATRE (closed as a movie theatre in 1966, currently undergoing reconstruction),
- PALAIS ROYALE (demolished in 2008),
- DOUBLE DECKER BUS (discontinued in late 1900's),
- KOOROONGABAH VEHICULAR FERRY & FORD HD 1965 Premier Sedan (ferry/harbour punts were sold in 1971),
- NEWCASTLE SUN NEWSPAPER WITH SYGNA STORM FRONT PAGE (Newspaper ceased publishing in 1980),
- OLD TIMBER FORESHORE PROMENADE (reclaimed from mines, shipping and harbour activities in the mid to late 1900's and current version was created in 1988).
