Part of the OLD NEWCASTLE SERIES, Newcastle 'As it Once Was' contains many landmarks from the city's past. Including landmarks from early 1900's Newcastle, this work shows the dramatic change the city has seen in the last century when compared with more modern works in the Newcastle range. It also shows the preservation of many buildings from our city's history, such as the Longworth Institute and Scott's Ltd Building, which have called Newcastle home from over 100 years each.
This work has an early camera texture overlay. The sepia tones and vignette adds an extra immersive element to the work, symbolic of the early 1900's landscape the work captures.
Work contains: (from left to right, top to bottom)
- SCOTT'S Ltd BUILDING (once the David Jones Building, now the QT Building),
- The ZAARA STREET POWER STATION (Built in 1915 and decommissioned in 1971, then demolished in 1978),
- BHP STEELWORKS BLASTER (Decommissioned in 1999),
- The LONGWORTH INSTITUTE (commissioned in 1891),
- TURKISH BATHS (located on Denison Street in Hamilton, demolished in 1961),
- BOROUGH MARKETS (located on Hunter St, constructed in 1870, demolished 1915),
- CHARLESTON STUDIOS (58 Hunter Street, replaced by the Rawson Hotel),
- TRAM LP284 (electric trams were decommissioned in 1940's and 50's),
- OLD POST BOX,
- NEWCASTLE FLYER 3801 (began service to Sydney in 1943, final trip in 1970),
- STATE DOCKYARD (open 1943, closed 1987),
- SYDNEY SOAP AND CANDLE COMPANY CRATES (located in Wickham in 1870).
